Whenever I heard the phrase “duplicate your upline”, I would cringe. I thought that I would have to “be” them. I thought I would have to change my beliefs, my personality, and my actions to “become” a kingpin in my network marketing company. Let me tell you that that is just not the case. Duplication is about studying the principles that your upline teaches, being active your own personal development, and then applying the two to your business.
Duplication is NOT about “becoming” your upline. Just look at your own line of sponsorship. I can take a look at an organization and see that one person might be an outgoing, loud jock… and then his sponsors might be a quiet older couple. Then their sponsors might be a total goof! No matter what your personality, you can learn people skills and the art of building relationships in your downline.
Some of the things that I’d look at when studying my upline are:
1.) How do they relate to the new people they meet? Your group can only grow as fast as you can bring people in to your organization. It sounds silly and obvious, but think about it. You need to build trust, show value, sign that person up, and get them started correctly… all as quickly as possible so they can learn and repeat the process in their downline. Building that trust and relating to your prospect is the first step. If your prospect doesn’t feel a connection to you, you’re NOT going to sponsor them not matter how badly they need your opportunity or no matter how good your presentation is.
2.) Listen to how your upline answers prospect’s questions. Back when I started, I used to get offended when prospects would ask certain questions. “No, it’s not a pyramid dummy! It’s a billion dollar company! Duh!” … or something similar. How does YOUR upline answer questions? How do they handle objections and what do they do to move your prospect to the next step. Learn this, and you can do this for your own downline.
3.) How is your upline GROWING? What books are they reading? What CDs are they listening to? This industry is very much about personal development. Your group can not grow and duplicate if you’re always driving them away. You must become a MAGNET to other people attracting them towards you, rather than pushing them away.
Study these 3 things, while performing the actions required to build your business… then you’ll really see how to duplicate your upline. Teach these principles to your downline and you’ll see them duplicate your eagerness to learn and you’ll have a growing… thriving organization.
