U.S. President Joe Biden delivered remarks at the White House on Monday during the nation’s Independence Day military barbecue.
Here, Biden stressed the country’s value that people are “all created equal” and that the U.S. is based on “ideas” rather than religion, geography or ethnicity. “The laws are instituted among people to protect the vulnerable, to check those with power, and to guarantee the pursuit of justice,” he said.
Seemingly alluding to a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Illinois earlier that day, Biden said, “you all heard what happened today. Each day, we’re reminded because nothing is guaranteed about our democracy. Nothing’s guaranteed about our way of life.”
These comments came as tragedy struck the Chicago-area suburb of Highland Park, Ill., leaving six people dead and 24 victims sent to hospital after a shooting at a Fourth of July parade, according to local officials. Police are actively looking for the shooter.
At a press conference on Monday, law enforcement officials told media that the shooting appears “completely random” and it appears the shooter was on a roof with a rifle, which an official from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department says has been recovered.
