Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam and deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo delivered an update at a virtual news conference on Friday regarding the growing monkeypox outbreak, as well as COVID-19.
In Canada, Tam reported that there have been 168 confirmed cases across the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Globally, there have been reports of at least 1,285 confirmed cases of monkeypox from 28 non-endemic countries as of June 8.
Regarding reducing the spread of monkeypox, Tam highlighted the importance of maintaining “good habits” that also help contain COVID-19, such as staying home when symptomatic.
She also added that exercising caution needs to be sustained despite the removal of various mandates, especially with Pride celebrations and the autumn season around the corner.
This update came after an Ipsos poll revealed at least half of Canadians are concerned about outbreaks of the monkeypox virus in Canada, but this concern doesn’t come close to the distress people felt over COVID-19.
