It’s time to say goodbye to the long-standing browser Internet Explorer.
The tech giant has gradually shifted away from the aging software, starting afresh with the new Edge browser in 2015 to coincide with Windows 10.
The browser was originally introduced way back in 1995 as the built-in browser for Windows 95.
Here’s everything you need to know about the end of the internet giant.
When does Internet Explorer end?
Internet Explorer will be shut down tomorrow – June 15, 2022.
From this time, according to Microsoft’s online help section, Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will end support for certain operating systems.
It will affect users on specific versions of Windows 10 client SKUs (version 20H2 and later) and Windows 10 IoT (version 20H2 and later).
The browser isn’t available on Windows 11 because Microsoft Edge is the default browser.
Microsoft announced last year that it would be retiring the company’s Internet Explorer 11 browser.
The last time the software received an update was in 2013 when Internet Explorer 11 was rolled out.
Why is Internet Explorer shutting down?
In place of Internet Explorer, Microsoft is pushing the use of its new web browser Edge onto users.
In a blog post last year, Microsoft explained: ‘Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure, and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications’.
Can you still use Internet Explorer after it ends?
Despite being retired, people will still be able to use Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Edge allows IE mode, where users can enjoy technologies from the original browser.
IE mode supports all document and enterprise modes, ActiveX controls, Browser Helper Objects, settings and group policies, F12 developer tools, and any Microsoft Edge extensions.
When Internet Explorer ends, the app won’t be removed from any devices as it is needed to power IE mode on Microsoft Edge.
What alternative web browsers can you use?
If you’re still looking for an internet browser to move to, you can download the following and surf the web for free:
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Apple Safari
- Brave
- Opera
- Dolphin Browser
- Tor
- Avast Secure
- Vivaldi
- Cheetah Browser
- Ghost Browser
- Avant Browser
- SeaMonkey
- Maxthon
