At least 33 people are missing and 11 are dead after Hurricane Agatha struck in southern Mexico on Monday.
The Category 2 hurricane made landfall in Oaxaca state packing sustained winds up to 105 mph. The storm brought mudslides, knocked out power and washed out roads and bridges.
Photos show the badly damaged Puente Herradura bridge in Huatulco, as well as damaged homes and vehicles in Oaxaca. More than 40,000 people were impacted by the storm, according to Oaxaca state’s governor.
Agatha was the strongest to hit Mexico in the month of May since record keeping began in 1949.
The storm is now a tropical disturbance, but it may reform into a tropical depression or storm within the next couple days. If the disturbance reforms into a tropical storm, it will be renamed Tropical Storm Alex, becoming the first named system of the Atlantic season. Whether it remains a disturbance or strengthens into a tropical storm, it is expected to bring soaking rains to Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas into the weekend.
