Haiti – Agriculture : Mexico seeks to contribute to the recovery of the agricultural sector in Haiti

As part of the preparation of a technical cooperation plan to strengthen agrifood production in Haiti, the head of the Secretariat for Agriculture and Rural Development in Mexico, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, affirmed his willingness to collaborate with the Haitian authorities, in order to promote projects for the cultivation of vegetables, the production of basic cereals and the planting of fruit trees in order to strengthen food security in Haiti.
He pointed out that Mexico is seeking to provide technical assistance, train specialists from public bodies and implement programs for the availability of seeds, supplies and agricultural equipment. He is convinced that with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, it will be possible to take advantage of the successful experiences of Mexico and Haiti and to initiate soil studies, prepare areas and seek the possibility rent or donate machines and take advantage of short and seasonal rain cycles
In addition, options will be explored to support agriculture in Haiti with the technical assistance of other international actors such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation. for agriculture (IICA).
Among the objectives are the installation of nurseries of fruit trees and vegetables to make plantations with irrigation systems and for commercial purposes. Increase the cultivation of local products such as cassava, bananas, mangoes and tubers, as well as beans, chickpeas and fodder maize for raising small livestock, such as goats, sheep and pigs.
Micro-basins will also be promoted, made up of stone gabions to stop and use rainwater. Soil improvement, compost management for nurseries will be done through vegetable waste from public markets, as well as the collection of organic matter and a mixture of urea, as well as the promotion of small methane gas modules to replace firewood in family kitchens.
He said that one of the objectives was to resume relations with IICA and regional and international organizations, to seek partners and create synergy in technical cooperation and exchange of experiences programs and other areas of opportunity to help Haiti and contribute to the recovery of the primary sector in Haiti.
