The annual red snapper season for private recreational anglers is set to start in June, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was also reminding anglers about a new federal regulation in a release on Friday.
The season in federal waters for private recreational anglers will begin on June 1 as bag and size limits will remain unchanged. Anglers are limited to two fish per person per day and a 16-inch minimum size in federal waters and 4 fish per person per day and a 15-inch minimum in state waters.

Plus, the TPWD stated in a release that a new federal regulation went into effect in January of this year as part of the DESCEND Act. The act requires “all commercial and recreational anglers to possess a venting tool or a rigged descending device on their boat while fishing for reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico.” TPWD stated in the release that “properly releasing reef fish reduces mortality for reef fish species like red snapper.”
The TPWD also reiterated in the release that it has the authority to open and close the red snapper fishery in federal waters off the Texas coast for private recreational anglers fishing from their own vessels, but the state must close the fishery after the allotted poundage is reached.
