Thousands of Sri Lankans went on strike on Friday, demanding the president, prime minister and government step down and take responsibility for the island’s worst financial crisis in decades.
Shops, schools and banks all shut their doors, with employees joining those already in the streets of the nation’s capital Colombo, with other major cities also seeing similar demonstrations.
Some also hung their underwear on barricades leading to Parliament, as a symbolic insult to the political leadership. One social activist said that the government was “naked,” and that the use of barricades to safeguard themselves from the public meant that “they are no longer our representatives.”
