The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s tennis team announced the signing of Valeria Cortes Astudillo (Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico/Andes Tuxtla S.C.) to a National Letter of Intent. Cortes Astudillo is the first signee for the Golden Eagles for the 2022 signing class.
“We are very excited to welcome Valeria to the Golden Eagle tennis family,” said Head Coach Josh Lunak. “Valeria is an experienced tennis player from Mexico. She’s been very successful at the national tournament level in her home country. She will be a great addition for both the University and tennis team. “
Cortes Astudillo will immediately help bolster the Golden Eagles as they look to build on a season in which they took a step in the right direction. Minnesota Crookston finished the 2022 season with a 2-12 mark. They picked up their first team victories since the 2014 season and posted their best season since 2014. The Golden Eagles were guided by Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany), who posted the best No. 1 singles mark in school history with a 7-7 record. The Golden Eagles have a great core returning with Schneider, Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.), Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.), Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), Tasha Achermann (So., Motley, Minn.), Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) and Ashley Chomyn (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba).
Astudillo is the daughter of Alejandro Cortes and Gabriela Astudillo.
The student-athlete listed as having signed a National Letter of Intent or Offer of Admission to play women’s tennis at the University of Minnesota Crookston have been verified by the Minnesota Crookston compliance office once they sign the National Letter of Intent or once the student-athlete has accepted an Offer of Admission for Minnesota Crookston.
