People across Russia expressed mixed reactions to allegations that Russian forces committed war crimes in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, where dozens of bodies of civilians were found in mass graves.
Current Time reporters asked people in several cities across Russia about Bucha and many repeated the Kremlin’s line that images of atrocities were “fake,” and was staged by Ukrainian soldiers. Some Russians, however, expressed shock and called the killings “horrible,” while others were too scared to share their true feelings.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least 300 civilians had been killed in Bucha, where mass graves and bodies were found after Ukraine took the town back from Russian forces.
Russian media have denounced the discoveries as an elaborate hoax — that the images were fake and published in order to justify further sanctions by the West against Moscow and “to complicate, if not completely disrupt, (peace) talks.”
