Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said Friday that progress in the COVID-19 pandemic “will not be linear,” with a resurgence in cases expected in the spring and likely in the fall and winter.
However, she said that due to higher levels of population immunity “we are in a stronger position.”
Tam also said that Canadians should continue wearing a mask or face-covering despite the relaxing of mask mandates across the country, adding that a resurgence in cases is inevitable when provinces lift restrictions.
Tam said immunity from COVID-19 vaccines or from prior infection would help keep hospitalizations down, but added, “that is not a guarantee” in all jurisdictions.
