The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) heard from members about the deepening crisis in Ukraine on Tuesday as the war continues into its second month. The meeting comes as Ukrainian and Russian representatives meet in Turkey in the latest round of in-person talks aimed at ending the war.
The UN Secretary-General called for a ceasefire and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Ruth Sherman said “citizens have been left without food, water, heat, or electricity in the depths of winter.”
“People have resorted to melting snow for drinking water. One mother told reporters she could feed her three daughters only a spoonful of honey a day.”
The UN says its food programme has been severely impacted and stressed unhindered access is critical to get supplies to people who desperately need them.
The UN adds costs are also rising dramatically, as Ukraine exported half of its grain supply to other countries before the invasion.
