Even if Russia pulls back on its goals in this war, one city it might try to take is Mariupol.
Ukrainian authorities in the besieged city said on Thursday about 15,000 civilians had been illegally deported to Russia since Russian forces seized parts of the southern port city.
Holding the port city would give a land corridor between Crimea and the Donbass region.
But despite constant shelling from the past month, only about half its residents have stayed.
