Although Russia’s assault continues, this isn’t the first time Ukrainians have had to fight foreign invaders.
During the Second World War, Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union, was attacked and occupied by the Nazis. Odesa itself was one of their first targets, and the city fought back for 73 days and inflicted significant casualties before it fell.
Jeff Semple looks at Odesa’s history during that conflict, what residents are enduring now in comparison, and how that port city formed a special bond with the Canadian city of Vancouver.
