The US Men’s National Team head into Thursday’s match with Mexico with their eye on a place at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Ahead of the clash, we take a look at the USMNT’s record versus Mexico.

The first time the sides met was in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 24 May 1934. The USMNT prevailed in the one-match, winner-takes-all qualifier in Rome, Italy only days before the start of the 1934 World Cup in Italy.
Since then Mexico has a stronger record, winning 38 times. The USA has been victorious on 23 occasions, with their last win coming in November 2021, a 2-0 victory on the day.
Mexico’s poor recent record
The USA have beaten Mexico in their last three meetings. Mexico last defeated the USA in a friendly in 2019, when they won 3-0 before a crowd of 48,000 in New Jersey.
Current CONCACAF standings
The USA and Mexico are both currently sitting on 21 points after 11 games played in the FIFA World Cup CONCACAF table. The USA are in second place with a better goal difference than Mexico, currently in third.
Group leaders Canada will travel to face Costa Rica on 24 March and Panama on 30 March. In between, they’ll host Jamaica on 27 March. Canada can automatically qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup with a win over Costa Rica.
Mexico vs USA
The US Men’s national team travels to Mexico to take on ‘El Tri’ in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday 24 March at 10 pm ET. The USMNT manged scoreless draws at Estadio Azteca in 1997 and 2013 and a 1-1 result last time out in 2017.
