NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg spoke Thursday about what the alliance has been doing in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but stressed while they are reinforcing its deterrence and defence through more troops in member states, they are trying to prevent further escalation. Stoltenberg said the alliance has a responsibility to prevent the conflict from moving outside Ukraine.
He made the comments alongside German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during a joint news conference on Thursday.
Stoltenberg said NATO had asked its military commanders to provide advice on the longer term response for the alliance and it is expected they will receive that advice in the coming weeks. He said based on that advice they would “take the political decisions on how to further strengthen, for the more longer term, our deterrence and defence.”
