The UN Security Council held its annual meeting with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) which among its key duties is monitoring the repeatedly broken ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.
Poland holds the rotating chairmanship of the OSCE, and its Foreign Minister H.E. Zbigniew Rau did not mince words as he addressed the United Nations Security Council on Monday.
“Mister President, distinguished Ambassadors, Russia’s aggression threatens the very existence of OSCE,” Rau said. “Its non-compliance with OSCE principals and commitments poses questions not only about the future of the organization but also about stability of the rules-based order. How effective can we be if one of the major stakeholders has repeatedly justified the use of force to win territorial and political concessions?”
The OSCE chairperson called out Russia, supported by the Belarus regime, for acting outside the parameters and boundaries of international law.
He pointed to the targeting of civilians and infrastructure and called on all sides in military conflict to abide by humanitarian law.
“Smouldering ashes of Khiv, Kharkiv and Mariupol and thousands of innocent lives lost are a spark reminder of a heavy price that we pay for indifference… in the face of brute force,” he said. “It is therefore high time for the international community, for the United Nations, as well as for the OSCE to reinforce our efforts to restore peace and to revert to our principles and the values. The integrity of international law and stability of the world order are at stake.”
