The Ukraine conflict underscores the importance of NATO deployments to the eastern flank and the alliance’s military drills, Latvian and Canadian commanders said on Friday as exercises took place at the Ādaži military base in Latvia.
Tanks and other armoured vehicles with flags of various NATO member states participated in target practice and other exercises, as military airplanes and helicopters practiced flybys.
Latvia’s Chief of Defence Leonīds Kalnins said that they were studying what is happening in Ukraine carefully and the tactics that could be used in the event of a potential attack.
Dan Richel, the commander of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence battle group in Latvia, said the situation in Ukraine “helps us focus on our major task” of deterring potential aggression.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, NATO activated parts of its rapid response force for the first time and member countries sent reinforcements to their fellows from the Baltics to the Black Sea.
NATO has four Enhanced Forward Presence battle groups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, established after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. There have been calls to set up similar battle groups in fellow NATO members Romania and Bulgaria.
