Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told British lawmakers on Tuesday that the question facing his country was “to be, or not to be” after Russia’s invasion, reiterating his calls for more help including tougher sanctions against Moscow.
Zelenskyy addressed British lawmakers on Tuesday via video link, the first time a president of another country has addressed the main Westminster chamber.
“Please increase the pressure of sanctions against [Russia], and please recognize this country as a terrorist state and please make sure that our Ukrainian skies are safe,” Zelenskyy said. “We will continue fighting for our land. Whatever the cost, we will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets.”
Following the U.S. lead, Britain will also stop the import of Russian oil by the end of 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the House of Commons on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian government accused Russian forces of shelling a humanitarian corridor it had promised to open to let residents flee the besieged port of Mariupol as the civilian death toll in the conflict mounted.
The European Commission published plans to cut EU dependency on Russian gas this year by two-thirds and end its reliance on Russian supplies of the fuel “well before 2030.”
