Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is extending the military mission in Latvia as part of a continued NATO effort to stave off further Russian aggression following its invasion of Ukraine two weeks ago.
The operation supports NATO military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe.
Trudeau made the announcement alongside Defence Minister Anita Anand, the Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the Prime Minister of Latvia, Krišjānis Kariņš, and the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday morning at the Ādaži Military Base in Latvia.
“Operations like ‘Operation Reassurance’ represent the very best that NATO has to offer,” Canada’s defence minister Anita Anand said.
Trudeau’s visit is part of several European trips for the PM to strategize with allies as fallout from Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine intensifies.
