Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that Canada is joining other Western countries and allies by imposing sanctions on Russian banks amid President Putin’s recognition of two Ukrainian breakaway regions as independent.
“Canada strongly condemns President Putin’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as so-called “independent states. This recognition is a violation of Russia’s obligations under international law and the Charter of the United Nations.” Trudeau said.
The sanctions will ban Canadians from financial dealings with the two regions; Donetsk and Luhansk.
They will also ban purchases of Russian sovereign debt, and apply further sanctions on two state-backed banks.
In addition to the sanctions, Trudeau announced the deployment of up to 460 Canadian troops into Eastern Europe as part of Operation Reassurance.
Similar actions were taken against Russia by European Union and NATO members amid Putin’s escalation of the situation on the border with Ukraine.
