U.S. President Joe Biden announced a set of sanctions against Russia a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of two breakaway regions in Ukraine as independent.
“Who in the Lord’s name does Putin think gives (him) the right to declare new so-called countries on territory that belong to his neighbours? This is a flagrant violation of international law and demands a firm response from the international community,” Biden said.
Biden added that Putin’s actions are the start to a Russian invasion of Ukraine after he ordered Russian troops into the breakaway bordering regions.
Biden announced a set of coordinated sanctions with NATO allies on two large Russian financial institutions, military banks, and sovereign debt. He said further sanctions would be imposed if Russia goes further with escalating actions or an invasion.
However, he stated that he is still open for a diplomatic solution for the situation.
Biden also said he authorized the move of U.S. troops into some Baltic regions to ensure safety.
“I have authorized additional movements of U.S. forces and equipment already stationed in Europe to strengthen our Baltic allies Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Let me be clear, these are totally defensive moves on our part. We have no intention of fighting Russia,” he said.
