Health Canada announced on Thursday it has approved Novavax’s protein-based COVID-19 vaccine for use in the country for people 18 years or older.
Health Canada said in a news release that Novavax’s two-shot Nuvaxovid vaccine was shown to have 90 per cent effectiveness at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 and 100 per cent effectiveness at preventing severe disease.
Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Thursday that the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) continues to recommend mRNA vaccines to most people due to their high protection and well-established safety profiles.
However, the committee recommends Novavax to people unable or unwilling to get mRNA vaccines.
Novavax is not authorized as a booster dose but it may be given as a booster to people unable or unwilling to take an mRNA vaccine.
