A TODDLER has died after eating a poison-laced cookie that was allegedly thrown to the family’s noisy dog.
Heidy Valeria, two, suffered two respiratory arrests in Tototlan, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, on Thursday.
The young girl ate part of the allegedly poisoned cookie and was taken to a nearby hospital on February 1.
Council general secretary Epigmenio Carrillo said the cause of her death is still unconfirmed.
However, the family pet also suffered the same problem.
According to the news site Telediario, the girl suffered two respiratory arrests while doctors battled to save her life, eventually passing away two days later.
A local resident said: “The truth is, the news has shocked the whole town. In fact, social media erupted when it became known what had happened.”
Tototlan residents rushed to Facebook to express their shock and claimed the girl had been poisoned by someone targeting the family dog.
Carrillo could not confirm the allegation, and said the authorities would make an announcement as soon as the facts had been established.
However, Carrillo did state that another local child, reportedly six years old, had also been hospitalised due to intoxication from an unidentified substance.
However, it is still unclear if the minor’s condition is related to the deceased toddler.
Activist and influencer Arturo Islas Allende said: “We lost Valeria, we lost a two-year-old girl, because of some unscrupulous characters who threw poisoned cookies in Tototlan, Jalisco. Those guys should be in jail.”
The authorities have offered their full support to the victim’s family as the investigation continues.
