Toronto Police Chief James Ramer said on Friday that some road closures are already in place ahead of a planned truckers protest in the city over the weekend.
“To protect Hospital Row, from 11:30 a.m. [Friday] University Avenue between College Street and Queen Street will be closed. College Street — from University Avenue to Yonge Street — will also be closed,” police said.
The closures come to protect patients and staff access to hospitals amid the protest.
Anyone who attempts to disrupt hospital access will be subject to strict enforcement, according to police officials.
Police encourage the public to avoid the demonstration area if possible and to use public transit if they need to be in the downtown area.
Mayor John Tory said he received calls from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, and Premier Doug Ford to offer the support of their various levels of government amid the protests.
