Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman said Friday that disruption from a protest against COVID-19 mandates at the Manitoba Legislature is “not significant.”
Bowman said he recognizes the pandemic has been “difficult for all Canadians” and urged “patience and understanding” from both the protesters and Winnipeggers who might be impacted by the demonstration.
He said everyone in the province has the “freedom” to choose whether or not to get the vaccine, but that there would be consequences for those who do not.
The city’s police Chief Danny Smyth said the department has “an open dialogue” with organizers. Responding to a question asking about comparisons between the protest in Winnipeg and the one in Ottawa, he said that was “not a fair comparison” to make.
