The White House confirmed a report Friday that their own intelligence suggests that Russia may be planning to use a false flag operation to pave the way towards an eventual invasion of Ukraine by mid-January to mid-February.
“Russia is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating a pretext for its operation and we’ve seen this before,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday.
“We saw this before leading up to 2014 just to note, including through sabotage activities and information operations by accusing Ukraine of preparing an imminent attack against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. And the Russian military plan is to begin these activities several weeks before military invasion,” Psaki said.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that Russia was not ready to wait forever for the U.S. and NATO to respond to its security demands, and that his government wanted a detailed written response to every Russian proposal.
Russia has massed more than 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine. Concurrently, Ukraine was hit with a cyberattack Friday warning to “be afraid and expect the worst,” just hours after diplomatic talks between Russia and western states had wrapped up without any major breakthrough.
