New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs announced on Thursday that the province will enter Level 3 of its COVID-19 Alert System at 11:59 pm on Friday, for a period of 16 days.
He said the stricter measures are due to spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations amid the spread of the Omicron variant.
Under the new restrictions, all public gatherings will be banned, including theatres, cinemas and entertainment centres.
Gyms and spas will be closed while restaurants will be limited to take-out or drive-through only.
Faith gatherings will be permitted outdoors.
The premier reassured people that he doesn’t want the province to spend 2022 under lockdowns and that businesses and schools will be able to reopen after the 16 day period.
