Quebec Premier François Legault announced Tuesday the government would be imposing a health tax on those who refuse to get vaccinated for COVID-19 for non-medical reasons.
While no dollar amount was specified, Legault said he wanted it to be a “significant” amount, adding the tax would not apply to those with legitimate medical exemptions. He added he had felt the “ire” of the vaccinated towards those unvaccinated, who he blamed for clogging hospitals. He said only 10 per cent of the population was unvaccinated but they made up 50 per cent of patients in ICU beds.
During Tuesday’s briefing, Legault also thanked Dr. Horacio Arruda for the work he had done in the role of public health director after he had submitted his resignation on Monday. He named Dr. Luc Boileau as the interim public health director. Asked if he stood by the advice Arruda had given and why he wouldn’t keep him on, Legault said he did stand by with the former director’s guidance, but said there were advantages to having someone “new after 22 months.”
