More than half of the European population is expected to be infected with the Omicron COVID-19 variant within the next six to eight weeks, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said on Tuesday.
Europe saw more than 7 million newly-reported COVID-19 cases in the first week of 2022 – more than doubling over a two-week period, Hans Kluge told a news briefing.
“The Omicron variant represents a new west to east tidal wave sweeping across the region, on top of the Delta surge that all countries were managing until late 2021,” he said.
However, currently approved vaccines continue to provide protection and reduce severe disease, hospitalization and death, said Kluge.
